From Camera to Decision: Hardware for Smart Cities and Security

The Chain That Turns Images into Data

Smart city applications have turned the camera into more than a recorder: AI-powered systems analyse video in real time and raise an alert as the event happens. Aetina positions these platforms across factories, warehouses, smart buildings, campuses and smart cities for intrusion detection, perimeter monitoring, crowd analytics, licence plate identification and fire and smoke detection; in Innodisk's smart street light case study the same hardware also carries environmental monitoring.

The cost, in Innodisk's words, is higher demands on input video quality, on the quantity of data and on the processing cost of running computationally intensive algorithms at the edge; as these systems grow in complexity, their stability becomes just as critical. Björn Tech builds the whole chain: from the camera that carries the image over a long cable to the recording drive that does not drop frames, the field cabinet on the pole, and remote access that still works when the operating system does not.

Recommended in this sector:

  • POLYRACK: CasTech (up to IP65, pole and wall mounting) and SmartTech (enclosures for field-cabinet network equipment).
  • YCC Fan: DC axial fans: moving heat out of closed field cabinets.
  • Innodisk: IP67 GMSL2 and MIPI CSI-2 cameras; InnoREC recording SSDs and 2.5" SATA archive up to 8 TB; InnoOSR one-button recovery; EGPL-T102 10 GbE; InnoAgent out-of-band management; APEX-E100 and EXMU-X261 (inference at the edge).
  • Aetina: AIE-PN33/43-2PSE | -4PSE (PoE camera ports) and AIP-CR68 (fanless visual recognition with Hailo-8).

Uninterrupted Recording, Real-Time Decisions

  • Recording without dropped frames

When write speed drops during continuous recording, frames are lost and the image degrades; a frame lost at the moment of an incident destroys the evidence. Recording drives have to hold a steady write rate for hours.

  • Multi-camera streams without latency

Analysing several cameras at once is not the same as processing a single image: the streams have to be handled in parallel and the decision latency has to stay below the duration of the event itself.

  • Video over a long cable

The camera is usually metres away from the compute unit: on a pole, on a ceiling or outside a vehicle. The image has to survive that distance intact, and the camera has to survive the weather.

  • Outdoor sites and field cabinets

Surveillance hardware meets sun, frost, dust and humidity. The enclosure has to hold its protection rating and still move the heat that builds up inside; both are solved in the same design.

  • Reaching an unstaffed site

When a system locks up, the nearest technician can be hours away. Out-of-band access power-cycles the device even when the operating system does not answer, and a recovery mechanism brings the system back without an IT visit.

  • Connecting to external systems

A surveillance system at the network edge has to connect to various external systems and data networks: high-bandwidth links, PoE ports that power the cameras, and an uninterrupted line back to the control room.

Building Camera, Recording and Inference as One System

The chain starts at the camera. Over long cable runs, IP67 GMSL2 cameras carry the image without degradation; close to the machine or the ceiling, MIPI CSI-2 modules from 2 MP to 13 MP run at low latency. Where the cameras are PoE, Aetina's systems with PSE ports power them over the same cable.

Recording and inference are two separate loads that run at the same time. InnoREC drives hold a steady write rate during continuous recording; on the inference side the Innodisk APEX-E100 delivers up to 36 TOPS at low power, while the EXMU-X261 handles four 2 MP streams on its FPGA at sub-30 ms latency. The Aetina AIP-CR68 does the same job in a fanless body with a Hailo-8 accelerator.

The system has to sit somewhere: on a pole, in a cabinet or in the control room. POLYRACK's CasTech and SmartTech enclosures hold the protection rating, YCC fans move the heat out, and Innodisk's 10 GbE module and InnoAgent provide the link — and access even when the operating system does not answer.
