Keeping the Chain Unbroken

The supply chain runs from the production warehouse to the cashier: POS systems take inventory, warehouse scanners track parcel progress, backend systems turn the collected data into inventory control. In Innodisk's words, all of these must work reliably to ensure the chain never breaks.

Aetina's logistics platforms process data at the edge in automated picking, sorting, palletising and goods-movement applications. Björn Tech builds the hardware side of that chain: the compute module and navigation system in autonomous warehouse vehicles, the cameras and inference hardware that read the parcel and the label, the touch panels at the front of the store, and the memory, storage and bus modules that tie them together.

Recommended in this sector:

  • POLYRACK: PanelPC 2 (IP65 front, 10.1"–21.5" touch screen for kiosks), CasTech (conveyor-side control unit up to IP65) and EmbedTech SFF (enclosure for embedded boards).
  • Innodisk: EXMP-Q911 (compute module for AGVs and AMRs) and APEX-E100 (AMR/AGV navigation); MIPI CSI-2 cameras and EXMU-X261 (label and parcel recognition); M.2 PCIe Gen4 SSD; wide and ultra temperature DDR5; isolated CAN modules.
  • Aetina: AIB-MO23/33-S1 (board-level platform for the vehicle) and AIP-CR68 (fanless visual recognition with Hailo-8).

In the Warehouse, on the Road and in the Store

  • 24/7 operation on unstable power

In Innodisk's words, rugged systems in AMRs and warehouses need added protection against unstable power supplies and other interferences. Longevity comes from hardware, firmware and software working together.

  • Temperature, humidity and vibration in the warehouse

Outside the POS in a temperature-controlled store, every other part of the chain is exposed to the highs and lows of temperature and humidity; AMRs and other mobile equipment also take shocks and vibration.

  • Navigation in the aisle, without latency

A vehicle moving between racks has to see the obstacle without the latency of the cloud: the image is processed on the vehicle and the decision is made before the vehicle has to stop.

  • Accuracy in reading parcels and labels

In sorting and counting, a single misread label becomes a wrong shipment further down the chain. Several camera streams have to be analysed at once and at low latency.

  • A durable surface at the front of the store

Kiosks and self-service systems in front of customers are touched, cleaned and tampered with all day; the front face has to be both protected and presentable.

  • One core that adapts to different scenarios

A warehouse vehicle, a delivery robot and a store kiosk share requirements but differ in the details. A single core system that adapts to the specifics without sacrificing reliability or introducing compatibility issues makes development faster.

Building the Vehicle, the Camera and the Store System from One Source

The moving end of the chain is the vehicle inside the warehouse. Innodisk positions the EXMP-Q911 compute module explicitly for AGV and AMR applications through its CAN FD, 10GbE and RS-232/422/485 expansion modules, and the two 4-lane MIPI CSI-2 inputs on the module take the cameras directly. Where a ready-made system is wanted, the APEX-E100 does the same job for AMR/AGV navigation, and Aetina's AIB-MO23/33-S1 reaches up to 157 TOPS on a palm-sized board.

Where the parcel and the label are read, accuracy comes before raw compute. MIPI CSI-2 cameras run from 2 MP to 13 MP at low latency; the EXMU-X261 handles four streams on its FPGA at sub-30 ms; and the Aetina AIP-CR68 performs visual recognition with a Hailo-8 in a fanless body.

On the store side the hardware faces the customer: the IP65 front and 10.1"–21.5" touch screen of POLYRACK's PanelPC 2 form the face of kiosks and self-service systems, while CasTech and EmbedTech SFF carry the electronics behind them. The layer that ties the chain together is Innodisk's wide-temperature memory, power-protected SSDs and isolated CAN modules.
